Should You Repair or Replace Your Garage Door?

Our default is simple: we repair first, and we would rather save the door you have than sell you one you do not need. That said, there is a point where a repair is throwing good money after bad. Here is how we think about it, the same way we would talk it through on your driveway.

When a repair is the right call

• A broken spring, cable, or roller on an otherwise sound door. These are wear parts. Replacing them on a solid door is routine and far cheaper than a new door. See spring repair and cable and roller repair.
• An opener that quit, on a door in good shape. Often it is a gear, a sensor, or a board, not the whole unit. Opener repair buys years.
• Cosmetic dings on a structurally fine door. A dented panel is not a reason to replace a door that still runs true.

When replacement is the honest answer

• Rot, rust-through, or a cracked frame. Once the door itself is failing, new parts are bolted to a losing structure.
• Repeated failures. If you are fixing the same door every season, the math turns.
• A door that no longer fits the house. On the pre-war colonials and Tudors around Westchester, a tired or wrong-style door drags the whole front of the home down. A period-correct new door changes the look and runs quieter.
